GETTING THERE:
Discover the Eastern Shore of Virginia! Chincoteague Island and NASA's Wallops Flight Facility are located on Route 175, six miles east of US-13 and five miles west of Chincoteague Island in Virginia. It is a 60-minute drive south from Salisbury and Ocean City, Maryland and a 90-minute drive north from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
IMPORTANT NOTE: You will need your own form of transportation to get around Chincoteague Island and surrounding sites. There is no public transportation in Chincoteague as it is a very small town. There is Greyhound bus service from some airports to a stop on Route 13. However, there is no transportation from that drop off point to Chincoteague Island.
Closest Airports:
(two hours drive to Chincoteague)
(one hour drive to Chincoteague)
(at least 3.5 drive to Chincoteague)
(at least 4 hours drive to Chincoteague)
If flying into airports other than SBY, there are tolls for the bridges and tunnels. Cash, credit cards and EZPass are accepted forms of payment.
If you are traveling from Norfolk International Airport, please be aware there is a hefty toll ($14.00 cash or credit one way) for the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. http://www.cbbt.com/toll-calculator/. If you have an EZ PASS transponder, you can use that. However, it is an amazing bridge that spans the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay! The views are spectacular, and you’ll see many species of gulls and even pelicans. You may be lucky enough to see US Navy aircraft carriers or battleships going out to sea!
